Pleasant) 。

Seattle Yee Representatives Attended 2008 Yee Fung Toy Society of Canada's 104th Anniversary Banquet

On February 23, six Seattle Yee Fung Toy Association officers attended the 104th Anniversary banquet of the Canada Yee Fung Toy Association held at the Floater Restaurant in Vancouver.

The banquet was attended by about 450 guests including the Chinese Consulate General, a B.C. Supreme Court judge and two Vancouver City Council members.

Fred Yee, representing the Seattle Yees, gave a brief greeting and performed a duet karaoke with James Yu, Vice Chair of the Vancouver Yee Chapter.

The event was marvelously handled by the two Masters of Ceremony, James Yue and Esther Yue. A lion dance performed by students of master Fan was eye-catching and in great form. The dance and singing performance from the Yee Fung Toy Alumni Association was of great joy. The scholarship ceremony for the younger Yees was all inspiring.

We all look forward to the 2009 105th celebration.

Our newly elected President of the Chapter, Shek Jing Yee, is a partner owner of this wonderful new restaurant. The Chapter welcomed Jim & Betty Yee and Martin & Rosa Yee of the Yee Fung Toy Society of Vancouver at the dinner.

The dinner was also highlighted by the presentation of a service award to Suey Yee. The award is in recognition of Uncle Suey’s decades of service to the Seattle Chapter. Shum Yee, Seattle Chapter Vice-Chair, gave a tribute to Uncle Suey's contribution. A plaque was presented to honor Uncle Suey's efforts. Fred Yee, Chapter Advisor, gave a brief report of his attendance of the Canada Yee 104th Anniversary banquet on February 23.

2008 Seattle Yee Fung Toy Association Easter/Ching Ming Cemetery Visits

Eight members of the Seattle Yee Fung Toy Association spent Easter Sunday visited several Seattle area cemeteries to pay respect to our elders who passed away and were buried in Seattle.

Among the cemeteries visited were Holyrood, Lakeview, Evergreen-Wasali and Mt. Pleasant.

Easter Sunday was a windy and rainy day; however, the weather did not dampen the spirit of the group for the visits after paying respect to the Yee Ancestral Altar which is housed on the top floor of De Sum Yee’s house.

The group met at De Sum Yee’s house on Beacon Hill at 10:30 pm in the morning. They headed out to the cemeteries after a light meal and visited all four cemeteries until 3:00 pm.

Great thanks to Suey Yee and De Sum Yee for arranging for the cemetery visit supplies and the food for the day.

1978 Seattle YFT Association Family Reunion

Here's a Blast from the Past, a historical event, the Seattle Yee Family Association 1978 reunion story!

Thanks to Karen Lee of Las Vegas, she recently emailed me and attached with a LIFE magazine picture taken in 1978.

The picture was part of LIFE 's featured article on family reunions in the LIFE October 1978 issue. The picture was taken at Seattle's Hing Hay Park.

Can any of you spot me in the above picture?

As Brian Lanker of LIFE reports, "one hundred-fifty-four strong and ranging in age from seven months to 80, three generations of Yees gathered in a Seattle park in late July to squeeze into a 24th annual reunion portrait."

"Many of them shopkeepers and engineers descended from Chinese who came to Seattle in the late 1870s, the Yees have some 20,000 members in the United States. The party, which include relatives from as far as Oxford, England, assembled for an outdoor picnic until rain forced them to retreat to a Chinese Restaurant."

"But this was just a warm-up for an even bigger event. A month later, nearly 1,200 Yees and their guests flocked to San Francisco to attend a mammoth 'Convention'."

Seattle Yee Fung Toy Open House

Over a hundred Yee Fung Toy members and their families, invited friends and community leaders attended the July 20, 2008 Seattle Yee Fung Toy Association open house celebration. The Association recently moved into newly leased facilities at the Eng Business Building (815 S. Weller's Street, Suite 210, Seattle, WA 98104) after over two years of temporary location at member De Sum Yee's family home. The new office of the Association is compact in term of space but is very functional and meets the current space needs of the Seattle Chapter.

Several association members have spent many hours arranging for the move, remodeling the office space and preparing for the open house celebration. Special thanks are to De Sum Yee and family, Yao Dong Yu, Kit Fung Yee, Uncle Hing Ng and others for their time and support for the success relocation of chapter office.

The open house celebration began at noon with the traditional ancestral ceremony of lighting candles and incense to pay respect to our Yee ancestor Yee Sheung Kung. Master Kwok Fung Leung's Kung Fu team performed the traditional lion dance and several wonderful acts of martial art skills and magic. The performance included the breaking of granite blocks, precision body balancing of small objects and body twisting through a metal ring.

A buffet lunch was served after the performance with wonderful help from several lady members of the association. Uncle Hing and Uncle James Yee gave thank you speeches in Chinese and English. The open house attracted many young families and children. All were invited to attend the July 27 Annual Seattle Yee Picnic at the Woodland Park Zoo.

Seattle Yee Fung Toy Association Annual Picnic

The 2008 annual picnic of the Seattle Yee Fung Toy Association was held at noon on July 27 at the Seattle Woodland Park & Zoo. Almost 150 members of the Seattle Chapter attended. Mr. & Mrs. Joseph Yee, Western United States Grand President and four members of the Vancouver Yee Fung Toy Association also attended the picnic.

There was plenty of delicious food including a whole pig donated by Hing Yu, Advisor of the Seattle Chapter.

Scholarships were awarded to 29 students totaling over $2,000. The traditional prize drawings were once again the highlight of the picnic. The picnic lasted 3 hours and ended with joyful memories for all.

Seattle Yees Attended Canadian Yee Convention in Edmonton

A record number of Seattle Yee Fung Toy Association members attended the 15th Canadian Yee Convention in Edmonton, Canada from August 6 – August 10, 2008. Four families with a total of 15 members attended this convention with enthusiasm. Fred Yee, one of the member attending the convention, commented that he enjoyed very much of the hospitality and friendship of our Canadian Yee family. The convention was attended by over 100 Yee Fung Toy members from Canada and the United States. The Seattle delegation attending the ancestral celebration ceremony, the opening ceremony, the photo taking sessions and the various dinners, outings and excursions organized by the Edmonton organizing committee. Members enjoyed getting to know many Canadian Yee members and other visiting U.S. Yee Fung Toy members including the Grand Presidents of the Yee Fung Toy Association for both the Western and Eastern United States.

The highlight of the organized excursion was a day trip to Lake Sylvan and a 2-hour cruise around the lake. About 40 visiting Yee members participated and all had a wonderful time. The opening dinner was on August 7 and was attended by almost 500 people at the Century Palace Restaurant.
