Chaplain James Yee honored at the OCA Greater Seattle Dinner

On February 11, former U.S. Military Chaplain Captain James Yee was honored with a special award at the 2006 Annual Golden Circle Awards Dinner at the Asian Resource Center in Seattle’s Chinatown.

Yee is a third generation Chinese American and a graduate of West Point who served in the U.S. Army for 14 years. He was assigned to serve as a Muslim Chaplain at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. He was secretly arrested and imprisoned for 76 days in solitary confinement after the Army accused him and charged with treason and aiding enemy terrorists. These charges were eventually dropped as they were later determined to be mistakes.

Yee now resides in Olympia, about 60 miles south of Seattle, Washington. He has resigned from the Army in early 2005 and is now an author who travels the country promoting his book, “For God and Country”. It is a story that depicts a journey of Yee’s faith and service. It is also a story of Yee’s courage, dogged perseverance and staunch defense of civil liberties.

Chinese Information & Service Center (CISC) Annual Dinner Auction

The 2006 Annual Auction Dinner for the CISC was held on June 3 at the Grand Hyatt in downtown Seattle. This year marks the 34th anniversary of the agency. Fred Yee, member of the Seattle Yee Family Association, was an early founding volunteer and board member of CISC. He has attended the annual dinner for more than two decades. Founded in 1972, CISC is a major non-profit social service agency serving Chinese and other Asian immigrant in the Seattle-King County area. Jim Yee and his wife, Betty, of the Vancouver Yee Fung Toy Association, attended this event with Fred and his wife, Clara. Jim and Betty were in Seattle for a 3-day trip to the Oregon coast with Fred and Clara and Seattle Chapter members Lan and Tony Ching.

The auction dinner was a success with over $100,000 raised. Highlights of the evening included the presentation of award by the Seattle Regional U.S. Attorney Office to Alan Lai, victim advocacy program director for CISC and several other community members for their work in working with the government to expose, arrest, and convict a scam artist exploiting members of the Vietnamese community, cheating thousands of dollars from community members.

My big thank you to Jim and Betty for supporting and attending the CISC auction dinner. We had a wonderful time.

[Ed. note] Betty and I also had a wonderful time attending the CISC Dinner for the first time, and gave us a rare opportunity to connect with members of the Seattle Chinese community, including Ron Chew, Director of the Wing Luke Asian Museum and author of "Reflections of Seattle's Chinese Community", pictured to the right of Jim (L) and Fred (center). We also met Dr. Sinclair Yee, younger brother of Dr. James Yee, Yee Fung Toy Family Association Grand Advisor. Both Fred and Sinclair help found CISC and continue to support the organization. See the note of appreciation to Fred and Clara from CISC on page 6 of its newsletter (A Model for Volunteers).
